Stockholm

Locals call Stockholm 'Beauty on Water' and it’s no wonder – the city is simply stunning.

The Swedish Capital is a beautiful historical city yet is also a modern and dynamic one too. Built on 14 islands, connected by 57 bridges, it's relatively compact and can be easily explored on foot.

The famous historic district of Gamla Stan (Old Town) has a unique character that attracts tourists from all over the world who marvel at the majestic palaces, narrow winding cobblestone streets and the well preserved buildings painted in many shades of gold and other bright colours. The area has a wealth of sights and attractions, restaurants, cafés, bars, and shops and is a must see when you travel to Stockholm. Modern Stockholm is avant-garde and sets trends in Europe in fashion and gastronomy. Stockholm has earned the reputation of being a centre of culinary excellence with ingredients sourced from the cities surrounding waters, fields and forests. From traditional Swedish dishes to devouring minimalist and modern Nordic cuisine, Stockholm is a food lover’s dream! Stockholm is stylish! Good design is standard and seen everywhere.  If fashion is your passion, get ready to shop!

When in town, don’t miss out on the maritime Vasa Museum and the world’s first open air museum, Skansen, both located on the island of Royal Djurgården. The impressive Drottningholm Palace has World Heritage Site status, and is the most important and best preserved royal palace in Sweden. No trip to Stockholm is complete without a trip to the Royal Palace, one of the largest palaces in the world with over 600 rooms. There are several museums within the palace building, including the Royal Armory, which has a collection of royal costumes and armour. The parade of soldiers and the daily changing of the guard is definitely worth watching.

Just a few minutes away from Stockholm you can travel to the beautiful archipelago. With some 30,000 islands, islets and rocks in the archipelago there is so much beauty to discover and explore. The rugged natural beauty blends impeccably with wooded islands, rocky cliffs and sandy beaches. Explore a wide variety of uninhabited islands and islets, some with old settlements and new flourishing communities.

For modern art lovers, the Moderna Museet (museum) is an essential visit on a tour of Stockholm. One of Europe’s leading museums for modern and contemporary art, it houses internationally famous masterpieces from Picasso to Popova and Dalí to Oppenheim. Another world-famous museum worth exploring is Vasa which houses the 17th century galleon. More than 95% of the ship is original, including the intricate carved wooden sculptures of the ship's exterior panels. This immense warship, almost 70 metres long, sank in the middle of Stockholm on its maiden voyage in 1628. It was removed from the seabed about 333 years later in 1961 – impressive!
