Småland

‘Sweden for real’ -  the official slogan of the region of Småland in the south east of Sweden is a place rich in culture, spectacular forests and lakes, quaint red cottages and a strong passion for local and organically produced food.

It’s also the birthplace of IKEA and author of Pippi Longstocking, Astrid Lindgren. It’s known for being a hub of innovation and creativity and when you travel to Småland you’ll understand why.

Småland is idyllic. From biking to hiking, canoeing to fishing a trip to Småland will make you fall in love with the great outdoors and being at one with nature. No trip to Småland is complete without taking a ride along the miles of cycle paths where you can enjoy a pit-stop for a bite to eat at many delicious eateries along the way. Ever fancy spending a night in a traditional red cabin? Småland Is the place to get cosy in one of the many quaint cabins dotted across the region. The Kingdom of Crystal (Glasriket) is a must see – a small a cluster of villages between the cities of Kalmar and Växjö and has been the centre of the country’s world-renowned glassblowing community since 1742. Don’t  miss a trip to the small town of Älmhult, the site of the first IKEA store and where flat pack was born – it’s now home to the IKEA Museum.

Småland’s cities offer the perfect harmony between urban life, outdoor activities and timeless culture. A trip to Jönköping on the edge of Lake Vättern – the second largest lake in Sweden –  blends city life, beach cool and outdoor life brilliantly. It's a great base from which to explore. Kalmar on the coast is a seaside city, rich in history with its 16th century castle which even has a moat. There are many great restaurants, pretty boutiques and delightful cafés to enjoy. While travelling to Kalmar, don’t miss a trip to the island of Öland where you can experience the stunning white sand beaches and it’s many hiking paths -  Öland is a popular place to escape in summer. And finally Växjö, it’s been called a  ‘small metropolis’ nestled away in the heart of Småland. It’s Växjö’s culinary scene that really stands out with several restaurants listed in the White Guide - Scandinavia’s leading restaurant guide. Växjö was once named Gastronomic Capital of the Year too!  We think you’ll like what you experience here.
