Norwich

A Gem of a City – Complete with its own Countryside!

A gem nestled in the north-eastern quarter of East Anglia, Norwich isn’t what many people would consider a must-see, must-do destination. But an incredible destination it is and we think you’ll be very pleasantly surprised too – there’s something for everyone.

Norwich is the only city in the UK with its own national park - and all 280 acres are completely FREE to visit. Whitlingham Country Park is the gateway to the Norfolk Broads and is a favourite with walkers, cyclists, families and birdwatchers. If you want to be a little more adventurous, you can get into the water to try sailing, windsurfing or canoeing. Or you can stay on dry land and try your hand at archery or bushcraft.

The city is also best explored on foot so bring comfortable shoes as while everything is pretty close, there’s lots to see. Norwich is home to no less than two cathedrals, Norwich Cathedral with its famous 315 ft spire, and the Cathedral of St John the Baptist – near to which you’ll also find the delightful Plantation Garden – yet another hidden gem!

Back in the Cathedral Quarter, you’ll also find Elm Hill, a meandering cobbled street that is home to more Medieval buildings than the City of London. We think you’ll want to take lots of pictures here! The Britons Arms is the only building that survived a fire in 1537 but the street was rebuilt and is largely intact to this day. In these quaint Tudor buildings, you’ll find some of the city’s most unusual independent shops.

At the heart of city when you travel to Norwich, you’ll find the Guildhall, England’s largest Medieval city hall, at the gate of the Norwich Lanes. This little part of the world is known for ‘making friends of strangers’ and has attracted mavericks and makers from around the world since the 14th century. And we can see why: it’s full of charm and culture that has been nurtured by a strong feeling of community spirit.  Jarrold’s Department Store is a local institution and sits among shops that have been here forever! You’ll even find a cinema in a 14th century merchant house.

The depth of history is counter balanced by a taste of the new and now: Norwich is an artistic hub that continues to attract artisans and makers producing cutting-edge fashion and running experimental restaurants. Norwich Market is one of the largest and oldest open-air markets in the UK, and you’ll find everything here from the makings of a picnic to local crafts – perfect presents!

If you’re a Set-jetter (someone who loves to visit film locations), Norwich has hosted more than its fair share of book, film and TV tie-ins, most recently these include the movies Fighting With My Family and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

If you’re a football fan, you’ll already be familiar with Norwich City FC, or the Canaries as they’re known! This Premier League team sells out Carrow Road for most home matches against giants such as Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal. But if you’re not lucky enough to catch a game, you can always take a tour – race you to the Trophy Room!
