Newcastle-Upon-Tyne

Howay Man! Welcome to Newcastle: A City for Everybody.

Newcastle upon Tyne and its twin city Gateshead are built on firm maritime foundations. Once major shipbuilding and manufacturing hubs, the area is now a thriving centre of business, the arts and sciences. We think you’ll recognise the iconic Gateshead Millennium Bridge that spans the River Tyne but there’s much more to discover…

In fact, the cities are linked by a series of seven iconic bridges and the quayside, now rejuvenated, is home to arenas and museums that attract both locals and visitors. If you’re new to Newcastle, a walking tour is a great way to get to know this historic city – the City Highlights tour will help you get your bearings and begin to explore the wealth of heritage that makes this place quite unique.

In the heart of the city, Grainger Town is towered over by Grey’s Monument and its stylish streets are home to elegant neoclassical buildings, including the Theatre Royal, and shopping opportunities that offer everything from department stores to the 19th century Grainger Market. Newcastle really comes to life at night and nowhere more so than here, where people flock to award-winning restaurants, cocktail bars and old-style pubs.

A little to the south you’ll find Newcastle Castle. Of course, this is the castle that gives the city its name, but it does have a few surprises in store – including commanding views across the river. It’s a great family afternoon out – kids will love finding out about the Castle’s ‘superheroes’ and you’re welcome to have a picnic in the grounds.

Also close by is the Discovery Museum which started life in Exhibition Park in 1934 as the first science museum outside of London. Here, you can travel through the city’s maritime, scientific and technological history, and walk through the Newcastle Story from Roman times to the early millennium.

Newcastle is also well-known for its independent breweries, micro pubs and tap houses. Craft beer connoisseurs will be in their element exploring an exciting menu of pale ales, cask beers and IPAs. Or you can take a brewery tour and get first-hand insight of the craft. Social events and pop-up markets are also on the menu.

If you want to escape the city for a bit, Newcastle sits in the heart of spectacular countryside and alongside a stunning coastline. Jesmond Dene is a narrow-wooded valley and a haven of peace and tranquillity, complete with picturesque waterfall.

If you’ve got the car when you travel to Newcastle, we’d really recommend taking a drive to the Beamish Museum near Stanley and stepping back into the early 20th century. This open-air, living museum is an absolute joy to explore – wander through original buildings from the time, pick up some pic’n’mix or fish and chips, and even hop on a 1950s bus. It’s one for kids of all ages! And your entry ticket is valid for 12 months so you’ve got an excuse to come back again and again.
