Tromsø

Walking through an Arctic Wonderland

Tromsø is not the edge of the world – but it can certainly feel like it. Located in the Arctic Circle just off the Norwegian mainland, it’s a place where a buzzing social scene meets jaw-dropping scenery. It has to be seen to be believed. Truly, this is the Norway you have been dreaming of.

Many travellers flock to Tromsø to experience the Northern Lights in one of the absolute best places in the world to see them. Discover Lady Aurora for yourself or chase the lights with a local guide. Prefer the daylight? In the summer months, the so-called Arctic Capital is also home to another incredible phenomenon: the Midnight Sun, which makes it easy to stay out late exploring the area.

The easily navigated city is positively humming with charm and energy. Check out the main street, Storgata, which is lined with shops, bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. Grab a seat at one of Tromsø's many restaurants and enjoy delicious and unique food made with fresh ingredients from the Arctic, including grilled stockfish, reindeer sirloin or, if you’re feeling particularly brave, seagull eggs.

Get the lay of the land by taking a cable car 421 m up to Storsteinen (the Big Rock), where you’ll have a panoramic view of Tromsø and the surrounding islands, mountains and fjords. Then hit the many attractions of the city. Science Centre of Northern Norway is the country’s largest planetarium and offers illuminating insights into the aurora’s science, history and mythology. For the art lovers, the contemporary art at the Tromsø Kunstforening is a must: It's the oldest art institution in northern Norway.

For family adventures, learn about the Arctic wildlife and meet arctic animals at the Polaria aquarium. Then have your breath taken away at Magic Ice, a fantastical winter wonderland constructed from tonnes and tonnes of pure ice.

As Tromsø is settled in the heart of the Arctic wilderness, there is a wealth of stunning nature and wildlife to be explore. Book a whale safari for a chance to see a humpback whale or orca. Or for something truly unique, go dog sledding or take  a husky walk to discover northern Norwegian nature (and perhaps spot reindeer) at your own pace.

Fancy something a bit more challenging? Try one of the many hikes in and arround Tromsø. Whether it’s family-friendly or something a bit more challenging, there are hundreds to choose from – a popular choice is the Sherpatrappa (Sherpa Staircase), where unmatched views await those who can endure 1,200 steps skyward. Or book one of many adventures offered throughout the region that will immerse you fully in the Arctic spirit, from fjord cruises to snowmobile safaris, Sami cultural tours, fishing expeditions and even reindeer sledding.

Tromsø is a little wild, a lot welcoming and unlike anywhere else you’ll ever visit. There’s truly magic in the air. Seeing it is an experience you’ll never forget.
