Aalborg

Aalborg is Denmark’s fourth largest city and is located in Jutland, only a 45 minute drive by car from Frederikshavn.

A small city with a unique character that has something for everyone, from museums and historic buildings to world-class architecture, the famous zoo, great shopping and an amazing restaurant scene. Aalborg is a cultural hotspot with a spectacular waterfront.

Plan your trip to include visits to the Utzon Center on Aalborg’s waterfront, designed by the famous Danish architect Jørn Utzon (designer of the Sydney Opera House) and his son Kim. It’s an experimental centre focused on architecture, design and art. The Kunsten Museum of Modern Art has been called a "showplace for 20th-century Danish and international art" and is a great place to visit if you’re a fan of modern art. The Aalborg Historical Museum is the best place to go to learn about the city’s 1,000-year history.

Aalborg's concert hall, Musikkens Hus, is an architectural landmark with stunning acoustics, an extensive concert program and is home to a gourmet restaurant - Musikkens Spisehus with a great view of the Limfjord. Nordkraft is a cultural centre that was once a power plant and which now features a theatre, music venue, cinema, sports centre, tourist information and much more. You can also enjoy good food at Azzura Nordkraft and at Café Mombay.

No trip to Aalborg is complete without a visit to Aalborghus, a beautiful half-timbered castle located in a stunning park right by the waterfront. Enjoy a stroll in the park and visit the underground passages where you can sometimes crawl through a dungeon! A visit to the Gray Brother Monastery underground museum, Gråbrödrekloster, is not for the faint hearted! Located next to the Salling Shopping Center, you can take the elevator down to see the skeletons, the remains of houses and the marketplace that gave way to the monks' monastery from the year 1240.

With over 75 specialty stores, Aalborg Storcenter is the place to shop. Here you’ll find amazing fashion and sports shops as well as restaurants and cafes. Are you a fan of street food? If so, then a put a trip to Aalborg Streetfood Køkkenfabrikken with its gastronomic delights on your list. A visit to the microbrewery Søggards Bryghus is a must to taste the freshly brewed beer and to buy some to take home too!

On the outskirts of Aalborg are some smaller parks such as the Sculpture Park and Source Park which have monuments and sculptures by different artists from different eras. One of Aalborg's most popular attractions is Aalborg Zoo where you can see animal species from all over the world from chimpanzees to African elephants and so much more.

Take a trip to Ålborgstornet, Aalborg's highest point where you can enjoy the tranquillity at the top and a fantastic 360 degree panoramic view. The Vikings Cemetery at Lindholm Höje is one of Scandinavia's best-preserved Viking remains with tombs from both the German Iron Age and the Viking Age found at the cemetery. North of the cemetery, there is a Viking village you can explore. At the Stone Age Centre Ertebølle you can also experience life during the Stone Age - a 1 hour drive from Aalborg that’s worth the trip.
